Summary

Building on previous work on alliance formation (Morrow) and extended deterrence (Huth), and employing a realist-constructivist theoretical synthesis, this paper presents a model to analyze why extended deterrence failed in Ukraine and what lessons it holds for an arguably more crucial case: preventing Chinese military action against Taiwan and ensuing great power war.
